Government official assaulted in court by a doctor

The attack allegedly took place after the two came out from the hearing.

New Delhi: A district nodal officer under Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Government of Delhi was allegedly attacked in broad day light in the Patiala House Courts premises on March 9 by a city-based doctor. The attack allegedly took place after the two came out from the hearing. The complainant approached the Tilak Marg police station last Monday, based on the court orders and lodged an assault complaint against the accused doctor who is already facing criminal charges.

The complainant, Dr Jyoti Prakash, a district nodal officer (PC & PNDT) as well as a counsel, in his complaint charged that he had appeared before the court on March 9 for the hearing scheduled at Patiala House Court against Dr Anoop Gupta, who owns a IVF & fertility clinic in Bengali Market. After the conclusion of the proceedings, at about 2.40 pm, when Dr Jyoti Prakash along with his counsel K.M. Divedi exited from the court room, the accused, Dr Anoop Gupta, obstructed him and started abusing him. When the victim tried to leave the place, the accused allegedly assaulted him. However, timely intervention by the victim’s associate, accused Dr Anoop was separated from the victim.

The incident was immediately reported to the metropolitan magistrate and subsequently there was a direction from the court to lodge a complaint to the jurisdictional police station in this regard. On March 27, the complainant approached Tilak Marg police station and lodged a complaint under Section 34 and 506 of Indian penal code. When contacted by this newspaper, Dr Jyoti Prakash refused to comment on the matter, he said, “I am a government officer and is not authorised to talk to you in this connection. A case has been filed as per the direction of the court. I have done my job and I don’t wish to further divulge any information in this regard,” said Dr Jyoti Prakash.

According to a police official, the accused, who owns an IVF & Fertility clinic in Bengali Market, is allegedly facing a criminal case for getting sex discrimination done.
