New Delhi: While more than 30 colleges in Delhi University are operating without a permanent principal for years, majority of the colleges consist of a truncated governing body. These colleges also include 28 colleges maintained by the Delhi Government, which do not have a single nominee for a full-fledged Governing Body.

According to DU Executive Council member Rajesh Jha, there are some colleges, which are dependent on a condensed GB while some of the colleges don’t even have a GB at all.

“Colleges under the state government do not have a full-fledged GB and are running with the help of truncated GB. There are some, which don’t even have the truncated GB because no names for teacher representatives have been approved yet. Thus the governance is getting deficit in the colleges and that will directly hamper the growth and development of the colleges,” he added.

Some of the popular colleges that are being supervised by an acting principal or an officer on special duty include Hindu College, SRCC, Hansraj College, Kirori Mal College, Gargi College, Motilal Nehru College, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, Bhagat Singh College (Evening), Sri Aurobindo College, Rajdhani College, Institute of Home Economics, Deshbandhu College and Bharti college among many others.

Colleges running without a GB include Ramjas College and ARSD. An Academic Council member has also written to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Education minister Manish Sisodia on this matter.

Mr Jha said that the university-maintained colleges have a full-fledged GB but the colleges established by trusts have been facing the problem with GB. “This is because either the trusts have not got the extension or they do not have a nominee,” he said.

“There have been many instances when, at a time there has neither been a principal nor a GB. After a period of time, the officiating principals need renewal and due to no extension period, the colleges were running without a principal. We have raised the issue many times in EC but there has been no decision. Around 4000 posts for teachers have also been vacant,” the DUTA member added.
