Budget 2018: Delhi Police gets Rs 7,000 cr to boost infrastructure

New Delhi: The Delhi police has been allocated Rs 7,426.98 crore in the Union Budget for the next fiscal, an increase of Rs 1048.8 crore from the current year, with Rs 19.75 crore being set aside for the Nirbhaya Fund.

Of the total amount allotted in the 2018-19 Budget, Rs 460.95 crore has been granted for police infrastructure that comprises office and residential building projects. Construction of ongoing building projects, purchase of land for eight projects, i.e. police stations, police posts, district lines, self-defence training institute for women, advance research and training institute, women hostel, battalion offices, etc.

There is a provision of essential items and equipment to enhance the capability of the women police force for training and holding camps for self-defence.

“In last year Budget, more amount was allocated under Nirbhaya fund as it included expenditure on infrastructure, but this year it does not include any expenditure on infrastructure,” said a police official. The Budget estimate has put non-plan expenditure at Rs 6946.28 crore, a major jump over the current fiscal’s estimate of Rs 5,910.28.

Besides, the Union government has also proposed to allocate Rs 700 crore for setting up an exhibition-cum-convention centre in Dwarka.

Fifty per cent construction work of the convention centre, which will include two halls, is expected to be completed by March 2019. “On completion, this new facility is estimated to generate over five lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities in core ECC facilities as well as in the supporting land uses like retail, office and hospitality,” the details in the budget document stated.

It also said that Rs 25 crore have been earmarked for setting up of performing arts centre and international cultural centers. The construction work at the national centre for performing arts complex with world-class facilities to be commenced. It added that cultural space and infrastructure will be created for performing art forms and to enhance people’s participation in the cultural activities.
