Woman found hanging, family smells foul play
Kolkata: A young married woman died under mysterious circumstances on Thursday night in Tollygunge a year after her marriage. Family members of the victim, Payel Chakraborty, alleged that her in-laws murdered her for dowry. Payel’s in-laws, however, rejected the claims. According to them, she committed suicide by hanging herself.
Payel’s husband Mriganka Roy has been detained by the police for questioning. Payel was originally from Shyamnagar in North 24 Parganas. She came to know Mriganka of Bansdroni through a matrimonial portal. Mriganka is a teacher at an English medium school in New Town.
Payel’s family members alleged that since marriage in January last year, she was often subjected to torture by her in-laws who demanded a huge amount of dowry.
“I last spoke to my daughter at around 8.45 pm on Thursday. She told me of visiting her parental residence on Jamaishashthi while asking for buying new garments for her husband,” Payel’s mother Balaka Chakraborty said.
Payel’s father Swapan Chakraborty said that Mriganka called them at around 10 pm to inform them that Payel hanged herself in a room and the body was kept at Bijoygarh Hospital. Payel’s family claimed that she was murdered before the body was hung. lodged a complaint with the police against her in-laws, Mriganka and Mriganka’s elder brother Mridul.
While Mriganka is being questioned, Mriganka and their parents have disappeared. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Preliminary investigation suggested that Payel’s death was due to hanging. The police has initiated a case on dowry death charges.
