North Delhi's Alipur to get sports centre

Proposed centre to come up on 8-acre land of NYKS; Rs 20 crore sanctioned.

New Delhi: Union sports minister Vijay Goel declared on Friday that a new youth sports centre will be built in Alipur. He said it will be built to in consonance with the aspiration of the youth of rural Delhi to have a state-of-the-art youth sports centre with all facilities since no such facility exists in the city's rural belt.

Mr Goel said that the project has been envisaged so that maximum youth can avail the facility for their overall development and promotion of sports in rural areas.

He said the proposed youth sports centre will come up on the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) land adjacent to Swami Shraddhanand College of Delhi University. The ministry has sanctioned an amount of '20 crore in this connection, the minister said.

The sangathan has land measuring 11 acre out of which 8 acre will be utilised for the sports sentre. Mr Goel said the complex will have all sports facilities such as football ground, an athletic track, volleyball, kabaddi and kho-kho facilities, besides a multipurpose indoor hall for training players in boxing and wrestling.

A modern gymnasium will also be developed. Sports Authority of India will create SAI training centre at this complex in the next three years, he added. He said in an arrangement both the sangathan and the SAI will jointly create and run this youth sports centre.

Mr Goel said the youth hostel in the centre will have a 200-bed capacity for providing training for youth leadership, skill development, life skills, national integration, cultural and the folk art activities.

The hostel will also have an information facility for providing relevant information to the youth about the flagship schemes of the central government for their development and welfare, Mr Goel said.
