Delhi: Police station gheraoed after law student thrashed by cops

In his complaint, Mr Pramod stated that on August 25, at about 1.15 pm, he got a call from the Adarsh Nagar police station.

New Delhi: Several students of Delhi University law faculty gheraoed the Adarsh Nagar police station on Saturday night after it was alleged that a law faculty student was assaulted and ill treated by the police.

Pramod Kumar, a third year law student, has accused that some police personnel of the Adarsh Nagar police station had tortured him, gave him third degree, abused him, and even used casteist remarks.

Mr Pramod also said that he had sent a complaint to DCP (Northwest) Vijayanta Arya and also tried to lodge an FIR at the Maurice Nagar police station. However, the cops there told him that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Adarsh Nagar police station, following which he went there.

In his complaint, Mr Pramod stated that on August 25, at about 1.15 pm, he got a call from the Adarsh Nagar police station. He was told that three persons, including his nephew Amar, had been arrested. When he reached the police station and asked why they had been arrested, the cops started thrashing him and hit him on his private parts.

According to sources, Mr Pramod’s nephew was earlier booked in March 2019 under Section 12 of the POCSO Act. He had gone to jail but is out on bail. Further, his nephew is also accused in a case of extortion and Arms Act regarding which an FIR had been lodged at the Adarsh Nagar police station.

DCP Arya said that an FIR has been registered based on Mr Pramod’s complaint under relevant sections, including the SC/ST Act. In addition, a probe has been initiated.
