Speeding car kills man in Lajpat Nagar, driver held

New Delhi: A 24-year-old motor mechanic died and two others were injured after a speeding car, allegedly driven by a 21-year-old woman, rammed into their stationary car while its tyre was being repaired in Lajpat Nagar area of south east Delhi on Saturday night.

Police said that the accused woman along with her friend left the car behind and fled from the spot. However, she was later arrested. The deceased mechanic was identified as Mohammad Afaq, a resident of Jakir Nagar, police said.

Confirming the incident, DCP (south east) Chinmoy Bisawal said on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, three friends Rudra Aashish Pandey, Nitish and Gaurav were returning home in Okhla after attending a marriage at Moti Bagh. When they crossed Moolchand Underpass at Ring Road, the driver’s side tyre got punctured following which they called a mechanic.

At around 1.40 am, when the mechanic was replacing the tyre, a speeding Chevrolet Cruze car came from AIIMS side and hit the mechanic along with Nitish and Gaurav, Mr Biswal said. The car was being driven by a woman who left the spot leaving her car behind and was later identified as Ananya Khurana, a resident of Lajpat Nagar-II, the DCP said.

Ananya, who studied in California, USA, and has a diploma in make-up artist course, had returned to India in December 2018 and looking for her own start-up. She was coming from the airport with friends in her car. Her parents were in an Innova car with the guests. Father of the accused has garments bussines in Lajpat Nagar, the DCP added.

The mechanic soon succumbed to the injuries following which a case was registered at Lajpat Nagar police station and investigation has been initiated. The offending vehicle was found to be registered in the name of a firm Maximum Outfit Pvt Ltd.

Eyewitness alleged that the accused driver was under influence of alcohol. They further alleged that the driver fled from the spot despite the presence of police including women officials.

However police said a medical examination will confirm the presence of alcohol. Further investigation is on, they added.
