New Delhi: While placement cells of Delhi University colleges have been thriving well over the years, the varsity’s central placement cell (CPC) has lagged behind in providing employment opportunities to large number of students. These startling revelations have come to light in reply to an RTI filed by law faculty student Mohit Kumar Gupta.

According to the CPC statistics provided in the RTI reply by the Dean of Students Welfare (DSW), only 5,808 students have been employed in last five years as against 43,237 students who had registered for placements.

“The statistics shows that only 13.43 per cent of students have been placed in last five years by the CPC, whereas the individual college placement cells such as of Miranda House, LSR, SRCC have been performing well and received high package offers,” Mr. Gupta said. Expressing concern over CPC not providing a single placement to LLB students, law student Vikas Bhaskar said, “The recent talks of autonomy of colleges is much required for DU’s own departments, especially faculty of law, which runs a professional degree course of LL.B. However it has failed to provide not just job, but even opportunities for job placements.”

However, the DSW in the 2016 CPC brochure said that the placement cell has seen exceptional success in the last eight years. “The percentage of students getting employment through placement cell has risen over the years making DU a preferred destination for recruiters,” it said.
