Citizens file petition in Delhi HC against felling of trees in city
New Delhi: Adding to the list of petitions against cutting of trees in Delhi, “The Citizen 4 Trees”, a group of environmentalists and concerned citizens came together and filed a plea in Delhi high court on Wednesday against indiscriminate cutting of trees in South Delhi.
The group, along with some Delhi University students, gathered outside the court to protest against felling of trees.
BPS Walia, 51, of Sarojini Nagar said, “The permission for the cutting down trees should be withdrawn. We understand that it is a long fight, but we are not calling for any mass agitation. It should be done in an organised manner”.
Harika pointed towards the increasing pollution in Delhi. She said, “The plan comes at a time when Delhi is choking from the adversarial levels of pollution. The night patrol teams have observed that even when the plan has been put on stay, attempts are being made to cut trees. A complaint has been filed in this regard.”
The NGT on Monday directed the authorities that no trees shall be cut in south Delhi colonies until further orders.
Prerna, volunteer said, alleged that the NBCC is taking out the roots from trees, which eventually led to their deterioration.
Highlighting its decision to stop the NBCC (India) Ltd from cutting down any trees till July 19 in Kidwai Nagar (East), Netaji Nagar and Nauroji Nagar, Prerna, “The Citizen 4 Trees” volunteer said, “We are protesting from the past 12 days, people came together and collected the sapling from already uprooted trees and planted them near their home. Underprivileged kids made people aware about their surroundings. There is a group of people forging night and day patrols to keep the vigil of the entire area.”
“We filed a police complaint yesterday and are still looking for police to come up with its investigation,” she added.
