Hoax bomb call sets off panic at New Delhi railway station

New Delhi: Panic prevailed at the New Delhi railway station after a hoax bomb call was made on Friday evening by an unknown caller who threatened to blow off the station in 10 minutes.

Soon, after the call was received the Railway police along with GRP force, the Delhi police, railway police sniffer squad cordoned off the station and carried out a three hours long search operation.

Speaking to this correspondent, a senior GRP official said, “A call was made around 5.20 pm on Friday evening. The man claimed that a bomb has been planted in New Delhi railway station premises which will blow off in 10 minutes and disconnected the call. Soon, security officials were alerted and additional forces were called in. The entire police station was cordoned off in lieu of security measures and the sniffer squads, along with a team of bomb disposal and detection squad, carried out an extensive search in the railway station premises and nearby areas.”

“However, after a long search of over three hours it was found to be a hoax call. Considering a security scare, the teams remained stationed inside the railway station.” According to the officials, prima facie it came to light that the call was made from a number (8873305476) registered in Bihar. Upon checking further, the police found that the number is registered on the name of one Abdul Kayyum. The police suspect that the caller played a prank in order to create panic.

A case has been registered and the police is verifying the details of the caller.
