Doctor rapes intern at Bara Hindu Rao Hospital

An FIR has been filed under appropriate sections and a probe has been initiated, said a senior police official.

New Delhi:A 23-year-old intern working at the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital was allegedly raped by a doctor inside the hospital. The intern approached the police with her complaint on Tuesday night, after which the accused was arrested.

The police said the victim alleged that Dr Gurdeep Singh, who worked in the medicines department of the said hospital, had called her to the duty room on the pretext of having dinner on Tuesday.

Initially, she ignored the request. However, when the doctor insisted, she joined him. She claimed that the doctor was in an inebriated state and he locked the room and raped her.

The survivor had joined the hospital as an intern in the general medicine department a month ago. During this period, the accused had started getting friendly with her. On Tuesday, when she reached his room, he started misbehaving with her. He then locked the door and forced himself on her.

The accused even allegedly threatened to give the victim negative marking if she resisted his attempt. He let the woman leave after threatening her with dire consequences.

The next morning, she narrated her ordeal to her roommates, who advised her to register a complaint. The victim approached the Sabzi Mandi police station on Wednesday morning and registered a complaint.

“The accused doctor was caught from his friend’s house after he had left his quarters following the incident,” DCP (North) Jatin Narwhal said.

Medical examination of the victim has confirmed sexual assault. The police said that the accused doctor was sent to Tihar jail after he was presented in Tis Hazari court on Wednesday.

The police is trying to find out whether the doctor had assaulted other interns. It has seized all the CCTV footages for further investigation and has made a list of people, who were present in the hospital at the time of the incident, for questioning.

An FIR has been filed under appropriate sections and a probe has been initiated, said a senior police official.
