New Delhi: A day after assuming charge of the water ministry, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday visited three decentralised sewage treatment plants (STPs) and and said that small locally-controlled STPs will be set up for better results at a minimal cost.

“Small STPs in large numbers will be controlled by locals would be set up across the capital to treat sewage and recharge groundwater at a minimum cost,” Mr Kejriwal tweeted, after inspecting STPs in Nehru Park, Satya Sadan and NP Bengali Government School in the Gole Market area.

Sewage management is one of the major problems in Delhi, which more often than not resulted in choking of drains during the monsoon season.

Mr Kejriwal was accompanied by senior officials of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and NDMC. He asked the DJB to come with a roadmap for decentralised STPs across Delhi.

“The board will present the road map to Mr Kejriwal on Friday (September 8) on STPs in all colonies of Delhi with a special focus on unauthorised colonies, which face the woes of sewage the most,” a government statement said.

Decentralised STPs will not only solve the crisis of sewage, but will also produce large amounts of recycled water. Mr Kejriwal had asked the senior department officials on Monday to come up with current status of water supply in all the city colonies for filling up of all vacant posts, presentation on decentralised STPs and a deadline to map out colonies without tap water.
