Mohalla clinics shouldn't be part of politics, says Delhi CM Kejriwal

The chief minister had last year said that his government will set up 1,000 such clinics by March 2017.

New Delhi: In an emotional appeal to the various agencies running the city, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday asked for support in making the “mohalla clinic” project a success.

Mr Kejriwal on Sunday said that everybody should leave behind party politics in assisting mohalla clinics and any help in setting them up was an “act of virtue”.

“Poor people are treated in the mohalla clinics. Any help towards setting up these clinics is an act of virtue. Everybody should come forward for the cause leaving behind party politics,” the chief minister wrote on micro blogging site Twitter.

He was referring to media reports about the Delhi government not being given land by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) for the expansion of the mohalla clinics and sought cooperation from all stakeholders. In the latest episode of clash between the AAP and its rival Bhartiya Janata Party, is not giving approval for the proposal of land use for the purpose by the BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

The scheme, which was one of the flagship project of the AAP government, has been embroiled in some controversy or other, resulting in a roadblock on many levels. The AAP after coming to power had promised 1,000 clinics where primary healthcare would be provided for free, mainly meant to support the economically weaker section of the society.

The chief minister had last year said that his government will set up 1,000 such clinics by March 2017, but could not achieve the target owing to several objections by the L-G and no land availability

Not giving the permission to use land area falling under the jurisdiction of the MCD is not just limited to this one proposal but a larger picture of tit for tat between the both. The corporations have long been demanding funds from the Delhi government and aid in many forms for better providing better civic services. Presently, around 158 mohalla clinics are operational in the national capital.
