Did hospital lose one of twin babies?

Woman alleges she was handed just one of her infants, DCW issues notices.

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women on Friday issued notices to Safdarjung Hospital and the Delhi police on the complaint of a lady who alleged that she delivered twins, but was handed over only one child. The women’s panel chief Swati Maliwal recommended immediate registration of an FIR in the case and sought response from the hospital and the Delhi police within 48 hours.

“The Delhi Commission for Women has received a complaint today from a woman whose delivery took place in Safdurjung Hospital on 22.12.2016. The lady has stated she delivered two babies, but was handed over only one baby by the hospital. Her ultrasound reports clearly mention ‘two live foetuses’. Further, a medical slip from the doctor clearly mentions twin pregnancy,” the DCW said in a statement.

“The complainant has alleged that when they inquired about this from the doctor and the nurse, they brushed off their concerns citing that the second child may have been ‘dumped’ with the garbage. The contents of the complaint are extrem-ely serious. The DCW has instituted an immediate enquiry in the incident,” the statement added.

The commission has also sought response from the hospital on action taken on the complaint, details of staff present at the time of delivery. “The DCW has also sought copies of all complaints of similar nature received by the hospital in the past one year and the action taken thereof to probe whether the involvement of any organised criminal groups,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, rubbished the allegations. “The allegations are baseless and there is no substance to them. As per the head of the department, she only gave birth to one baby and the woman had accepted that she gave only one push,” he said.
