The police said that the two minors, along with three others, set out to take a dip in the Yamina river to beat the heat.

New Delhi: An early Wednesday morning expedition turned tragic for a group of five friends, all minors, when two of them drowned in the Yamuna river in Brurai police station limits.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Himanshu (13) and Manhit (14), both residents of Pradhan Enclave. The incident said to have taken place at around 7.15am.

The police said that the two minors, along with three others, set out to take a dip in the Yamina river to beat the heat. The five friends, who had initially set out for a walk, decided to take a dip in the river. First, Himanshu decided to enter the water. However, when he struggled, Manhit jumped into the water to save his friend. But due to strong current, the two minors were pushed towards the deep water where they subsequently drowned.

The incident came to light when a passerby saw the two boys struggling to remain afloat and immediately alerted the police control room.

Soon a team of Delhi fire department officials, along with rescuers, the local police and a team from Vote Club rushed to the spot but by then the two minors had drowned.

According to an official of the Delhi fire department, it took nearly 40 minutes to fish out the bodies of the two boys which were then sent to Jag Jeevan Ram Hospital. One of the members of the Vote Club team said that there has been a rise in instances of drowning. In the past one week, more than six such cases have been reported.

The Burari police has registered a case of drowning and sent the bodies to a hospital for post-mortem.
