New Delhi: A 28-year-old man died after a massive fire broke out at an oil godown in west Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh area on Saturday evening. According to Delhi Fire Service, 22 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

The deceased was identified as Romit Kumar, a resident of Kirari, Delhi. He worked as an accountant at the oil godown, police said.

He was with the owner but was not able to get out when the fire broke out, said the police, adding that his mobile was also switched off. His family members have been informed.

Initially, there was no casualty but during cooling operations a charred body was found on the first floor of the godown, DFS said.

According to a senior fire official, they received a call about the fire around 4:57 pm. “Initially five tenders rushed to the spot and later on 17 more were sent,” said the official.

The cause of the fire is not known as yet. A senior police official said that all the adjoining buildings were evacuated as soon as the information regarding the massive fire was received.

All the civic agencies also reached the spot. From local enquiry, it was learnt that the building used to store lubricant oil. A case under relevant sections has been registered.
