Businessman, cousin arrested for Mercedes hit-and-run
New Delhi: A 27-year-old businessman and his cousin was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the Mercedes hit-and-run case in which a 17-year-old boy was killed in Outer Delhi’s Paschim Vihar area on Sunday.
Savneet Singh and his cousin Hashmeet, residents of Meera Bagh in Paschim Vihar, were arrested from West Delhi’s Rajouri Garden area by a crime branch team, said Praveer Ranjan, joint commissioner of police (Crime).
They had gone to eat at a market in Paschim Vihar. While they were leaving the market, their car allegedly hit 17-year-old Atul Arora’s scooter.
It is suspected that they were under the influence of alcohol, but it is being investigated, said another officer. The boy died on the spot due to severe head injuries, the officer added.
Savneet told the police that he had got a call about a fire breaking out in a restaurant adjacent to his furniture shop in Tilak Nagar and was in a hurry.
“He said that he had been told that the fire could spread to his shop, which is why he was in a hurry to reach his shop. His claim will be verified,” said a senior official.
The Mercedes car which was allegedly involved in the hit-and-run accident has also been recovered. A police informer, whom the accused allegedly had come to meet to dispose off his car, told police about him.
A trap was laid and Savneet and his cousin Hashmeet were arrested and handed over to district police for further action.
