DU dramatics societies focus more on political, social issues

There are more than 25 dramatics societies in different colleges, some have carved a niche for themselves.

New Delhi: From incessant singing and slogan raising to raised voices and loud invitations to draw in the audience, the street play societies of the Delhi University largely focus on addressing the social and political issues.

Every year freshers are offered more than just academics in DU; they get to be part of several extracurricular activities through various societies. The dramatic societies of DU colleges are one of the factors that add to the charm of being part of the varsity. While there are more than 25 dramatics societies in different colleges, there are some that have carved a niche for themselves over the years through their spellbinding “nukkad nataks” among the students.

Kirori Mal College (KMC) holds two theatre festivals, “Sareaam” for street plays and “Curtains” for stage plays. The college’s theatre group, The Players, has a long history of 52 years and has proved to be the launch pad for a number of talents for Bollywood, including Vijay Raaz. To identify new talents, the society conducts a month-long workshop during auditions. “We are popular for our script selection as our script reading sessions are followed by analytical discussions. We always try to perform an adaptation of a particular script, so that it remains relevant to local audiences,” one of the society members said.
