New Delhi: The Delhi government on Saturday announced “accident victim scheme” under which those affected by road accidents, fire and acid attacks will be provided free medical treatment in private hospitals of the city.

The announcement was made by Health Minister Satyendar Jain at a function at Talkatora Stadium here where chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was also present.

Mr Kejriwal said that if any patient doesn’t get a date for surgery at a government hospital within one month, the hospital would refer them to private hospitals and the government would pay all the expenses. “We will ensure that people, irrespective of their economic status, are provided with the best health and education facilities and this is a step in that direction,” the AAP leader said.

This was third in a series of initiatives taken by the AAP after ensuring free medicines in all government hospitals and allowing free medical tests at private diagnostic centres.

“There is no need to worry as the Delhi government will ensure thapatients receive the best treatment free of cost,” he said. Following criticism that the money paid to private hospitals for treatment could be used to augment government ones, Mr Kejriwal said that government hospitals would receives as much money as it requires to boost their infrastructure.
