Delhi Assembly mourns DMK chief's death, is adjourned
New Delhi: In a departure from tradition, the Delhi Assembly was adjourned for the day on Wednesday as a mark of respect to former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi. There is no precedent of adjourning the House over the demise of a former chief minister of other state.
Before the adjournment of the House proceedings, all members paid homage to the DMK chief by observing a two-minute silence. The members also paid homage to four Army personnel who were martyred in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
As the House proceedings began on the third day of the Monsoon Ses-sion, Speaker Ram Niw-as Goel expressed condolence over the deaths of Karunanidhi and four Army personnel.
Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and Opposition leader Vijender Gupta said the country will always remember the DMK chief. 94-year-old Karunanidhi breathed his last on Tuesday.
The House proceedings were delayed by around 20 minutes as Speaker Ram Niwas Goel was stuck in traffic jams in the city.
Mr Goel was commuting to the Delhi Assembly from his Shahdara constituency to attend the House proceedings that were scheduled to begin at 2 pm, but it started at 2.20 pm.
In the House, he said, “I got late due to traffic jam.” Sources said that Mr Goel’s vehicle was stuck in traffic jams in Shastri Park, Seelam Pur and other places. According to police, there were traffic jams due to movement of Kanwarias.
