The police cracked 95 per cent of rape cases, 86 per cent of molestation cases and 84 per cent cases involving insult to modesty of women.

New Delhi: More than 26 per cent cases of rape were reported by the victims who were either in a live-in relationship or their partners refused to marry them.

Out of 2,043 cases of rape reported in 2018, as many as 550 were because of failure of live-in relationship, said Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik on Wednesday during the annual Delhi police press conference.

Young adults acting immaturely by getting into commitments that end up in break-ups are among major reasons for increase in rape cases, said a senior police official.

However, the number of rape cases in national capital has shown a decline compared to last years. On the other hand, the police stated that they have solved 95 per cent of the rape cases.

In the year 2018, there has been reduction in cases pertaining to molestation of women by 3.05%, insult to the modesty of women by 8.37% and rape by 0.78%. In about 97% of rape cases, the accused were known to the victim. Strangers were involved in only about 2.50% cases. Involvement of strangers in rape cases has shown a steady decline during last two years along with a marginal decline in overall cases of rapes reported, said the Delhi police.

Out of 2043 cases, 888 case involved relatives and friends while 332 cases involved neighbours.

Delhi police faces the challenge of ensuring women safety in an adverse socio-economic backdrop.

The police cracked 95 per cent of rape cases, 86 per cent of molestation cases and 84 per cent cases involving insult to modesty of women.

Initiatives like police night patrol, mobile women police team, presence of women in PCR vans and deployment of policemen and policewomen around girl colleges and schools and drives against eve-teasers have helped in bringing down such cases.
