New Delhi: A person impersonating as an IAS officer working in the revenue department was arrested by the Krishna Nagar police on April 4 after he allegedly duped a businessman to the tune of Rs 28 lakh on the pretext of helping him with a tender.

The accused has been identified as Daman Ghera, a resident of West Azad Nagar. Daman had trapped the victim, Indrajit Singh, who runs an automobile business, by flashing high profile names. He used to travel in a VVIP car, along with a personal security officer, and drop fake visiting cards allegedly naming him as an IAS officer working in the office of the lieutenant-governor.

According to the police, the 36-year-old victim had met Daman at Connaught Place in 2014 for the first time through his brother-in-law Virendra Singh. Following the meet, Daman drew Indrajit’s attention on the pretext of helping him by giving him a tender advertisement in the Nagar Nigam. Indrajit fell into the trap and agreed for the same. The accused then told Indrajit that for getting the tender, he first has to register a company and demanded a share of 33 per cent. Indrajit agreed for the same and in September registered a company by the name Friends Enterprise.

The police added that after the company got registered, Daman allegedly told Indrajit that a notice for tender in East Nagar Nigam has come out and he should apply for it. The accused said that the tender was for Rs 18.5 lakh. Unaware about the motive, Indrajeet invested in the tender for which the accused produced a fake receipt and a bank draft copy. And in the similar fashion, Daman recovered the entire amount of Rs 18.5 lakh from Indrajit. During the course of the incident, Daman kept meeting Indrajit and even called him to the L-G’s office, where he allegedly met him outside the premises to keep his motive under wrap. “The accused told the victim that since he has paid the amount, he will get the tender soon. But, after two weeks, he again asked for Rs 10 lakh. After a long wait of over two years with no news of the tender, Indrajit approached the L-G’s office and inquired about Daman. He was shocked to know that there was no one by the name of Daman Ghera,” said a police official.

A case under various sections of the IPC has been registered against the accused.
