AUD only varsity to have quota for Delhiites
New Delhi: With the Delhi University maintaining the trend of declaring soaring cut-offs from the last few years and not having a quota for students who pass Class 12 from Delhi schools, other universities in the national capital have started gaining popularity among the students.
One such university is the Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD), which is a state university and reserves 85 per cent seats only for students living in the National Capital Territory.
The outstation students have to compete for the remaining 15 per cent seats. The only university mandated to focus on research and teaching in Social Science and Humanities, AUD offers 11 undergraduate programmes besides postgraduate and research courses. This year, it has introduced three more BA Vocational programmes including Tourism and Hospitality, Retail Management, and Early Childhood Centre Management and Entrepreneurship.
“What makes AUD different from other varsities is that it offers a unique BA programme with a dual major that can be completed in four years by earning extra credits. Also, this university is best for those students who wish to explore and understand the field of Social Sciences in a broader perspective,” sociology student Ritika Singh said.
Besides offering a full fee waiver to SC/ST and disabled students, it also has a quota for candidates who have achievements in any extra-curricular activities.
Till 2015, the varsity used to follow the traditional system of releasing cut-offs during admissions. But it was only last year when AUD released the “merit-cum-cut-off list.” It is a list made on the basis of the scores which the applicant had filled in their applications.
However, AUD — which is known for keeping generally lower cut-offs than DU colleges — had, for the first time, declared 100 per cent cut-off last year for five Honours courses: Sociology, Psychology, History, English, and Social Sciences and Humanities. While humanities students have an advantage during the admissions, the cut-off percentage for commerce and science students are high.
Ambedkar University Delhi is currently running two campuses — one at Kashmere Gate in North Delhi and the other at Karampura in West Delhi, which was launched last year. By 2020, the university aims to start two more campuses in Rohini and Dheerpur.
