Metro worker live-streams his suicide on Facebook, probe on
New Delhi: A 27-year-old Delhi Metro employee streamlined his suicide act on Facebook on Sunday in the national capital. A resident of West Bengal, the victim reportedly committed the suicide by hanging himself in his rented accommodation in Farsh Bazar area of Shahdara district.
The deceased has been identified as Shubhankar Chakraborty (27), a native of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, the police said, adding that no suicide note has been found from the spot. However, Chakraborty had a fight with his father, who visited him two days ago but it is being ascertained if he took the extreme step due to the fight as no one even raised suspicion over his death.
The Facebook live-stream purportedly showed him climbing atop a cooler, wearing the DMRC uniform. He looked into the camera a couple of times, kissed his company identity card twice before taking his life. A mobile phone kept buzzing in the background as he allegedly committed the act.
A police control room (PCR) call was received at police station Farsh Bazar at about 9:05 am on Sunday. The caller had stated that his friend has committed suicide by hanging and he had seen the video of the suicide on Facebook.
The staff immediately rushed to the spot where the caller, identified as Suryakant Das, house owner Sanjay Arora and other persons informed the staff that Chakraborty had been living as tenant for the last two months.
When the staff reached Chakraborty’s room on the second floor, it was found closed from inside. Subsequently, the door was broken and he was found hanging from the ceiling fan hook of the room with a yellow colored plastic rope, said the police, adding that the crime team was informed and the spot was inspected.
The police further said, the victim’s mobile phone was found at the window inside the room. Deceased’s friend Suryakant stated that on Sunday at about 8 am, one of his friends Akash informed him that he had seen a live video of Chakraborty in which he was seen committing suicide. Chakraborty was working as a staff in electrical and maintenance department of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for last 2-3 months.
He is the only son in his family while his sister is married and lives in West Bengal. His mother had expired 16 years ago, the police said.
