Fashion Outlet told to pay Rs 50,000 in damages'
New Delhi: A Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed a fashion outlet to pay Rs 50,000 to a woman for ruining her wedding day by selling her a wrong length lehenga.
It also directed the firm situated in Central Delhi’s Chandni Chowk to refund her the cost of the lehenga and to deposit Rs 5 lakh towards the consumer welfare fund of the state as punitive damages in respect for those who may have been dealt with in a similar manner and are not identifiable.
The woman had filed the complaint in the commission eight years ago. The commission noted that the outlet harassed the woman and added that it was disappointed that it took a long time for the woman to win the battle against the outlet. “She had to spend around Rs 5 lakh in fighting her battle over a petty issue,” it noted.
According to the complaint, in 2008 the victim had bought a lehenga for her wedding day. She noticed that the dress was two inches short and its bottom was also not in good shape. When she asked the outlet to get the dress fixed, she was told she would be given the lehenga after repairs before her wedding day.
