New Delhi: A 41-year-old imposter, who used to create fake profiles on matrimonial sites and cheated women, has landed in the net of the cyber crime team.

The police said that the accused person used to create fake profile on different matrimonial sites to attract potential prospects and their families. He then indulged in various criminal activities such as extortion, blackmail, and physical assault on the pretext of marriage.

The cyber cell of the special cell has arrested the imposter, who has been identified as Anurag Mendiratta, a resident of Dwarka. With his arrest, two cases of fraud have been worked out.

According to deputy commissioner of police (cyber cell) Anyesh Roy, the complainant had levelled allegations of cheating on one Siddharth Walia who had fake accounts under this name at two prominent matrimonial portals. The complainant was cheated to the tune of Rs 6 lakh.

In the other case registered at CR Park, the accused person had created a profile by the name of Siddharth Oberoi. He had personally met the complainant under his real identity of Anurag Mendiratta. Notably, he projected himself as Siddharth Oberoi’s cousin. 

“Anurag Mendiratta cajoled the complainant on one pretext or the other and subsequently sexually exploited and blackmailed her. A complaint was received at the cyber cell in which a case was registered and investigation was taken up,” said Mr Roy.

During investigation, technical analysis and physical verification provided the leads through which Mendiratta was identified as using fake profiles under the name of Siddharth Walia. He was arrested after sufficient evidence was collected. 05:07 13-04-2018Further investigation is underway.
