67 new lots to ease city's parking woes
New Delhi: In an attempt to provide major relief to citizens from their parking woes, the BJP ruled South and North Delhi Municipal Corporation is constructing 67 new parking lots, which will accommodate over 20,000 vehicles.
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has identified 45 locations for construction of new parking lots, while the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has planned to construct 25 new parking lots in its jurisdiction.
According to a senior SDMC official, the corporation will be constructing 42 multilevel automated parking lots in three zones — West, South, and Central — with an estimated capacity of about 8,000 vehicles.
“Identification of land has been done and the construction process will start with the invitation for technical bid. All the new proposed parking lots will be constructed within eight months and it will be thrown open for the public,” he said.
The SDMC is constructing 16 parking lots in the West zone with a total capacity of 2,410 vehicles; 13 in South zone with a total capacity of 1,504 vehicles; and 13 in Central zone with an estimated capacity of 3,975 vehicles.
“Once functional, these 42 new proposed parking lots will accommodate 7,889 vehicles,” a senior SDMC official added.
A senior SDMC official told this newspaper that identification of land has been done after analysing the footfalls.
“Most of the areas identified for the new parking lots witness heavy footfall and need parking space to decongest the area. These multievel automated parking lots will be constructed on SDMC’s land,” he added. The NDMC has also identified 25 new locations for the purpose.
