Golden Jackal rescued near Sanjay Van in South Delhi

The animal is undergoing treatment, and upon recovery, it will be released into the natural habitat, the Wildlife SOS said.

New Delhi: An approximately six-month-old female Golden Jackal was rescued after it was found injured in a road accident in the periphery of Sanjay Van Forest in south Delhi.

The animal is undergoing treatment, and upon recovery, it will be released into the natural habitat, the Wildlife SOS said.

Concerned by the sight of the animal lying unconscious on the side of the road in Kishangarh village, a passerby alerted the NGO. A three-member team reached the location and took away the animal for treatment.

The NGO said it had received a call from a passer-by on Tuesday that the jackal had fallen victim to a road accident in Kishangarh village, located on the periphery of the dense forest.

“Identified as a female of approximately six months, the jackal had sustained external injuries on the body and neck region,” the NGO said.

Sanjay Mehlawat, who had alerted the NGO, said, “I found the jackal on the side of road and it appeared to have been hit by a speeding car or a bike”.

The Golden Jackal, (Canis aureu) also known as the common jackal or Asiatic jackal belongs to the canidae family and is a native to the Indian Subcontinent. This species is protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The animal is currently undergoing treatment and upon recovery, will be released back into its natural habitat.

Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS, said, “Our dedicated team of veterinarians is carrying out the necessary treatment for the injuries sustained by the jackal. It is not uncommon for us to receive rescue calls where an unsuspecting animal has been injured due to negligent or rash driving. Such accidents not only put the life of the animal at risk but also pose a threat to the safety of the people driving the vehicle”.
