JNU student gets death threats, probe on

The police, when contacted, said that they are looking into the matter.

New Delhi: A PHD student and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was threatened by unknown persons on Thursday.

The unidentified accused had delivered a threatening letter to the doorsteps of room No 242 of Jhelum Hostel, where Saurabh Sharma resides.

Sharma, who hails from Mirzapur in UP is a research fellow in Computational Neuroscience.

In the letter, which he received via post at his hostel room, the accused had warned Sharma to leave JNU or face dire consequences.

“The change you want in JNU will never come. You will never win any election here. Now go away from here otherwise be ready to face the consequences, “ read the letter read.

Sharma was elected as JNU Students’ Union joint secretary in 2015-16. He was very vocal and criticised the February 9 incident and carried out a protest against the accused professor who was involved in the sexual assault.

Sharma said, “They will try all sorts of things to stop and deviate us from our goal, but we serve India and will continue to serve it no matter what the consequences will be.”

He even filed a complaint with the university administration where he insisted on putting CCTV cameras in the Campus and even asked them to beef up security.

In his complaint to the JNU vice-chancellor, the research scholar alleged that on April 18 while he was protesting against the accused professor Lama — the professor had instead threatened before Sharma could react by saying, “Don’t you love your life. Don’t mess with me”.

Since then he has been receiving threat messages from strangers who are pressuring him to stay away from the case. On Friday, Sharma filed a complaint with the police.

The police, when contacted, said that they are looking into the matter.
