Delhi: Passenger boards plane carrying kitchen knife

The incident brings to light a lapse in security at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport which manages 58 million passengers yearly.

New Delhi: In a major security breach, a passenger boarded a Goa bound SpiceJet flight from IGI airport with a kitchen knife on Friday. The airline has confirmed the incident, saying that the passenger onboard the flight himself reported to the cabin crew that he was carrying a kitchen knife in his hand baggage. The flight was grounded at the airport. The SpiceJet staff immediately brought the matter to the attention of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

In an official statement issued after the incident by SpiceJet, the airline said that the incident came to light when the passenger onboard the Delhi-Goa SpiceJet flight himself reported to the cabin crew that he was carrying a kitchen knife in his hand baggage.

“The aircraft was at that point still on grou-nd. The SpiceJet staff immediately brought the matter to the attention of the CISF,” the statement added.

As soon as the passenger revealed that he was carrying a knife, he was thrown out of the aircraft and handed over to the airport police.

The incident brings to light a lapse in security at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport which manages 58 million passengers yearly.

The aircraft then underwent another security check after which the aircraft was allowed to take off. The passenger was later lodged at IGI airport’s police station.

“We have ordered an enquiry and action will be taken against the personnel found responsible,” said CISF spokesperson.
