Driver's fault identified as key cause for 45 per cent mishaps
New Delhi: Driver’s own fault has been identified as the root cause for approximately 45 per cent of the road accidents that have taken place in the capital last year, according to special commissioner (traffic) Dependra Pathak.
Delivering the key-note address at a conference titled “Role of corporat-es in road safety” at Ficci on Friday, Mr Pathak said the Delhi traffic police was working overtime to improve the process of arresting culprits with help of te-chnology, improve road infrastructure, punishment errant drivers by cancelling their driving licence in the forthcoming amendment of the Motor Vehicle Act.
A new set of guidelines ensuring stringent measures to curb fatalities caused by drunk driving among others would be issued soon, he added.
The role of technology is important in ensuring implementation of road safety rules, catching violators and punishing offenders, said G.K Pillai, chair, Ficci committee on homeland security.
All nations across world are committed to slash road fatalities by 50 per cent, however, in India, it has been rising rather than coming down, he added.
