New Delhi: Mama, as she was known, inspired terror in the urban ghetto where she lived. But the undisputed godmother of Sangam Vihar, who also led her sons into crime, was finally arrested on Friday after absconding for eight months, said DCP (South) Romil Baaniya on Saturday.

Basheeran (62) and her eight sons have been accused of bootlegging, murder, robbery, snatching, and other such crimes in a total of 113 cases.

The queen of crime in Sangam Vihar, a locality in Southeast Delhi, was released from Tihar Jail a couple of months ago. Some of her sons are still locked up in Tihar, police said. She had control over government borewells in Sangam Vihar and was running a water supply mafia.

On Friday, acting on a tip-off, the South district police arrested Basheeran. She had been absconding from the past eight months in a murder case and was declared a proclaimed offender by the court.

At least 42 cases are lodged against her son Shamim, 15 against Shakeel, 13 against Vakil, 9 against Faizal, 9 against Sunny, and 2 against Salman while her juvenile son has 11 cases lodged against him. Out of all these cases, 7 are lodged under charges of murder and 3 for attempt to murder.

Some months ago the police reached her residence to arrest her but she managed to escape. Ever since, she was on the run. After police obtained the court order, her house was raided under Section 83 of the CrPC. If sources close to Delhi police are to be believed, Basheeran did not only make her own children criminals, she also got hundreds of minors addicted to drugs and made them a part of her gang. She gave juveniles weapons to commit crimes.

Basheeran was also wanted in connection with the murder of a man named Miraj. He was murdered on September 17, 2017.

As of now, 4 members of the lady don’s family are on the run, 2 are in jail, and 3 are out on bail.

A case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999, (MCOCA) has been registered against her son Shamim. Along with the other family members she will also be booked under this case for amassing wealth from crime proceeds.
