Police endeavour to make New Delhi tobacco-free
New Delhi: Taking a progressive step to make Delhi a tobacco free zone, Delhi police in association with NGO, Sambandh Health Foundation and Max India Foundation, organised a workshop in Constitution Club of India on Thursday.
Reducing tobacco usage is a crucial to improve health of both users and non-users of tobacco. The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA), prohibits smoking in public places, direct or indirect advertising and selling tobacco to minors within 100 yards of schools and sale of tobacco-products without statutory warnings.
Speaking on the occasion, P. Kamraj, special commissioner, law and rder (South) highlighted the efforts made by the police in this regard. He said, “We first trained and sensitised our force on COTPA and started taking action on people caught smoking in public places or selling tobacco. So far more than 30,000 people have been fined under COTPA All Delhi Police Districts ran the campaign.”
