Woman burnt to death for dowry in Vikaspuri

Victim's in-laws were torturing her for money, husband held.

New Delhi: A 24-year-old woman was allegedly burnt to death over a dowry row in Delhi’s Vikaspuri on Saturday. The police has detained the husband and has registered a case under Section 307/34 of IPC.

The police has identified the deceased as Parvinder Kaur, daughter of Satpal Singh. Parvinder got married to Gurcharan Singh in 2012. According to her brother Sandeep Singh, his sister was constantly being harassed by her in-laws over the issue of dowry.

He told the police that Parvinder’s in-laws had demanded dowry and had threatened her of dire consequences if she didn’t fulfill it.

The matter worsened when they allegedly threw Parvinder out of the house and asked her to return only if she had money. Probe reveals that Parvinder was staying at her maternal house for the last 10 days. Her in-laws and her husband were constantly torturing her for money.

Parvinder was called to her in-laws’ house on Friday to take her son’s clothes when her husband, along with his father, allegedly doused her with kerosene and set her on fire.

The incident came to light when the victim’s cries for help were heard in the neighbourhood. Soon, the news spread and Parvinder’s father and two brothers rushed to the house to rescue her. In a statement to the police, Sandeep said that when they reached the house, their sister was on fire and was crying for help.

When they tried to save her, Parvinder’s in-laws allegedly charged an attack on them. The three sustained some injuries. However, they managed to inform the jurisdictional police. A team rushed to the spot and moved Parvinder to Safdarjung Hospital where on Saturday, she succumbed to her burns. The police has registered a case of dowry death against Parvinder’s husband and father-in-law based on Sandeep’s statement.
