Record rainfall in Delhi-NCR, traffic crawls
New Delhi: In the past 24 hours, the national capital has recorded the highest rainfall in a single day in June in the past four years.
Delhi received around 26.4 mm rainfall in one day — from 8.30 am on Monday to 8.30 am on Tuesday — which is the highest recorded rainfall in a single day in June since 2013 (June 19), which recorded 58.5 mm rainfall.
Moreover, the city has received 81.8 mm rainfall so far till June 20, which is also the highest till now since June 2013.
An official of the MeT department said that as per forecast, more showers are expected in the next two days and it is likely that it will break the 2013 record.
The maximum temperature settled six degrees below normal for this part of the season at 32.2° C, while the minimum was recorded at 23.2°C, five degrees below normal.
While the recent wet spells left Delhiites cooler on Tuesday, it was a double whammy for the scores of motorists after they were caught in a monstrous jam caused by waterlogging and due to an oil tanker, which turned turtle in South Delhi.
The traffic movement from South Extension to Ashram Road was badly affected, creating considerable problem for the people heading towards their offices. According to police officials, the traffic jam surged due to water logging in major areas like Ring Road, MG Road, and ISBT Road.
Even vehicular movement from Delhi towards Gurgaon came to a standstill as heavy rains lashed Delhi and NCR region on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. It took motorists more than an hour to travel just a few hundred metres at the Hero Honda Chowk, which had been the focal point of a massive jam last year too.
