Big guns boom on campaign's last day

Rallies were conducted by various political parties on e-rickshaws and bikes.

New Delhi: The national capital witnessed a high-voltage campaigning on Friday for the upcoming municipal polls. The last day witnessed continuous campaigns by big leaders of the main political parties, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in a final bid to woo the voters through public meetings, roadshows, and road-to-road canvassing. Voting for the 272 seats of the three municipal corporations will be held on Sunday.

AAP leaders Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Dilip Pandey held public meetings and roadshows in different parts of the city to woo the voters, while chief minister Arvind Kejriwal led a roadshow in Kalkaji area of South Delhi. Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari, who campaigned in different parts of the city, ended his “Vijay Vikas Yatra” campaign for the civic polls in Saket area of South Delhi. Union minister Vijay Goel undertook a bike campaign to woo voters. Mr Goel said that AAP has lost all confidence after its huge loss in Punjab and Goa and has been shown the trailer during the Rajouri Garden bypoll loss. The Congress also made a last attempt to reach out to the voters. Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Maken and the party’s star campaigner, Raj Babbar, held roadshows and a series of public meetings for the civic polls.

Delhi will vote on Sunday to elect a new South Delhi, an East Delhi and a North Delhi municipal corporation. All three were earlier one single body — municipal corporation of Delhi. The results will be announced on April 26.

The North Delhi municipal corporation (NDMC) and South Delhi municipal corporation (SDMC) have 104 seats each and East Delhi municipal corporation (EDMC) has 64 seats.
