New Delhi: Two men were killed and five others were injured when an SUV rammed a vegetable cart and overturned after hitting a divider on the Najafgarh-Bahadurgarh road in Southwest Delhi on Saturday night.

The men travelling in the Nissan Terrano were heading to Gurugram to attend a wedding. The police said the driver and the car owner, identified as Shiv Raj, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, were killed on the spot.

The incident was reported at around 11.35 pm. The police said that when the vehicle reached an empty stretch near the Essar petrol pump, the driver, Ajay, started speeding. He tried to take a turn in order to avoid hitting a three-wheeled motorised cart when he lost control of the vehicle.

The car first hit the vegetable cart, throwing the driver on the roadside. It then hit the footpath on the opposite side and overturned. The car dragged on for about 100 metres before ramming into a tree. The front portion of the car was completely damaged.

Shiv Raj and Ajay suffered severe injuries on their head and face. Locals informed the police and the fire-brigade. The fire officials had to be cut open the vehicle to remove the bodies. Three of the five other occupants have been identified as Narender, Vivekanand and Anil. The police said that all of them were admitted to the Rao Tula Ram Hospital where Shiv Raj and Ajay were declared dead on arrival.

The cart driver too was admitted to a hospital with minor injuries but was released after treatment. The police has recovered a few bottles of country made liquor from the car.
