GGSIPU to admit law students from CLAT
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that the admission to LLB courses in Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) for the academic year 2019-2020 would be done on the basis of CLAT (common law admission test) score.
The vacation bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice M.R. Shah said that admissions to undergraduate law courses in GGSIPU would be done on the basis of CLAT and not the CET (common entrance test) as directed by the Delhi high court.
“
They (University) took permission from the government and it was permitted to admit students on the basis of CLAT,” said Justice Mishra.
Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the GGSIPU, told the vacation bench that the University, which conducts its own examination, had taken permission from the government this year to admit students who had appeared for CLAT.
Senior counsel PS Patwalia, appearing for some of the students aggrieved by the University’s decision to take the CLAT route to admit students in undergraduate law courses, said that the decision would affect thousands of students who had not appeared for CLAT.
Mr Patwalia said, “What the court is doing is extremely harsh on the students.”
The court took umbrage to some of the juniors assisting Mr Patwalia for speaking when the latter was arguing. The court said, “It is contempt, they should know when to speak and when to stop.”
