Man dies in custody, 2 cops suspended

The DCP said that a public grievance inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances of Singh's death.

New Delhi: Two police personnel were suspended on Thursday after a 45-year-old man allegedly died in police custody in Delhi’s west Naraina area on Wednesday.

The family alleged that he was mercilessly beaten and later was thrown off the terrace.

The deceased, Dalbir Singh, was arrested while he tried reportedly to purchase medicines from the Army Base hospital using a fake

prescription. He also carried fake medical documents with him, the police said. A case of cheating was registered against him, said deputy commissioner of police (DCP), West, Vijay Kumar.

The family, however, alleges that he was brutally thrashed in custody and, the cops who had arrested him demanded money for his release.

The post-mortem report is awaited, but based on an inquiry, an SI and a constable at Naraina police station have been suspended.
