Heritage walk aims to saves 16000 trees
New Delhi: In a bid to save 16,500 trees, a heritage walk was organised on Sunday by Dr Navina Jafa of Centre for New Perspectives and Delhi Chipko NCR at Mehrauli.
“The heritage of Delhi is dying slowly along with the trees. One must remember that no page of history is complete without the existence of trees,” said Dr Jafa.
From Buddha’s enlightenment to Newton’s law of gravity — all happened under the shade of a tree. Trees not only provide fruit, oxygen, medicine and shade, but also provide peaceful energy.
“Trees mark the age of our heritage, which has been well showcased by our performers at an event in Mehrauli with the Navina Jafa of Centre for New Perspectives,” Dr Jafa said.
The event sought to tell the story of Mehrauli as a stark reminder of how the “development” of Delhi has gone wrong leading to the erosion of tree, and orchard cover in the area and destruction of intricate freshwater hydraulic systems.
The street performers as part of project TAMA-SHOW of the Centre for new perspectives — (Bahu-rupiya, snake charmers) are organised as green foot soldiers for environmental develop-ment communication and singers from the Dilli Gharana performed to recall the Saawan in Mehrauli in the years gone by, and warn about irresponsible development.
The protest was of a unique kind with music and dance in the rain. Jahaz Mahal, Mehrauli. Chipko-Delhi-NCR.
“More than 100 local community residents, who took part in the walk deliberated in Hindi and despite the rain, urged the team to repeat such informative and entertaining events.
They expressed their wish to plant saplings and clean up the Shamsi Talab. A passer-by was heard mentioning that 40 years ago the talab at Jahaz Mahal was huge, but has since then reduced in size,” Dr Jafa. Rajiv Kakria from Save Our City said.
