Cabbie's first day on job turned out to be his last
New Delhi: “He left home early as it was his first day at the new job. But it has turned out to be the last day of his life,” said the grieving wife of a cab driver who died after a speeding BMW car hit his vehicle near IIT Flyover on Outer Ring Road in South Delhi on Sunday night.
The victim has been identified as Nazrul (27), a Gurgaon resident who hails from West Bengal and is survived by a wife and two children, aged four and two years. His family lives near Chakkarpur area near Galleria Market in Gurgaon’s Sector 4.
Taimur Islam, a friend of Nazrul and the owner of the cab, said that Nazrul used to drive a private car but had lost his job last week due to a disagreement with his previous employer. He employed the latter to drive one of the cabs that were registered with Uber.
The victim’s wife Arizna Bibi, who works as a domestic help, said that after switching jobs, Nazrul was happy. He wanted his children to get good education and a better life. But all of his dreams are now shattered; there is no one to take care of the family. “Nazrul’s four-year-old son is in school while his daughter is in a playschool. His parents are old and live in their native place.
He also sent money to them periodically,” said Altaf, a cab driver. The cab drivers staged a protest at the Vasant Vihar police station and demanded strict action against the BMW driver. They alleged that the BMW driver will manage to get bail and skip punishment by using his ‘money and sources.’
“Once again a poor family has been left to survive on its own. The BMW driver will use top lawyers and connections to get out of it. Nazrul’s family will struggle for their daily bread,” said Kishore Singh, another cab driver.
Dileep, who was present there at the time of the accident and had helped to evacuate Nazrul from his car after the accident, said that the BMW’s speed was very high when it hit Nazrul’s Wagon R from behind.
“After the crash, the driver of the BMW had come down and opened the door of the cab while the others, including me, helped pull the injured driver out of the cab. The BMW driver used the situation to his advantage and managed to flee. He barely stayed two or three minutes after the accident,” said Dileep.
