2 medical students fall off Signature Bridge, die

The deceased have been identified as Satya Vijay Shankaran (23) and Chandra Shekhar.

New Delhi: Two medical students were killed after they fell off the newly-constructed Signature Bridge in Delhi when their sports bike rammed into a divider on Friday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Satya Vijay Shankaran (23) and Chandra Shekhar. Shankaran, who hailed from Ranchi, was interning with the Hindu Rao Hospital and Shekhar, a resident of Khanpur in South Delhi, was a second year MBBS student at the same hospital.

This is the first accident at the bridge, which opened to the public on November 4 after eight years of construction.

According to police, the deceased were roommates and had come for a joy ride when the incident took place.

“We received a PCR call at around 8.40 am informing about an accident on the left turn loop of the newly inaugurated signature bridge. A team reached the spot and found that two people on a KTM Duke motorcycle, apparently driving at high speed, had hit the divider and fell off the bridge (left turn loop). While the bike was found on the bridge, the two riders fell approximately 40 feet down the bridge,” said a senior police officer. Police said that both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the officials declared them brought dead on arrival. The two were not wearing helmets.

The police informed the family members of both the victims. Shekhar’s family rushed to the hospital immediately while Shankaran’s family was on its way from Ranchi.

The students of Hindu Rao Medical College reached the hospital after hearing the news of the accident.

“The two were roommates and on Thursday morning went on a joy ride as they always did on their off days. We got to know about the accident from the administration,” said Umesh, a student.
