Another bike rider dies in Signature Bridge mishap

Dangerous' selfies in the middle of the bridge a cause of concern.

New Delhi: In yet another fatal accident at Delhi’s Signature Bridge, a 24-year-old man died while his cousin was injured after their motorcycle skidded and hit a road divider on Saturday. This was just a day after two medical students died in a crash at Delhi’s premium bridge.

The deceased, Shankar, was riding the motorcycle and his cousin, Deepak (17), was riding pillion, police said. It added that the duo was on their way to the Northeast district from Nangloi.

The Timarpur police station was informed about the accident at 8.20 am.

Police said the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Shankar was declared brought dead while Deepak sustained knee injuries. Shankar, a resident of Ghaziabad, worked as a salesman and was unmarried. Deepak is a resident of Shalimar Bagh.

He told the police they were wearing helmets but that Shankar’s helmet fell off after skidding and his head hit the divider.

This is the second such accident in less than 24 hours on the Signature Bridge since its inauguration by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on November 4. On Friday morning, two medical students were killed after they fell off Signature Bridge after their sports bike rammed into a divider.

The two fell approximately 40 feet down the bridge after their bike rammed into a divider. They were on a KTM motorcycle, “apparently riding at high speed” and not wearing helmets, the police said. Initially, there were reports of the victims performing stunts or taking selfies at the bridge. However, police has ruled this out in their investigation.

The Signature Bridge, which was inaugurated amid much fanfare and political tussle on November 4, has become a cause of concern with several visitors taking “dangerous” selfies and causing traffic snarls by parking in the middle of the bridge.

With two accidents in two days, the newly constructed Signature Bridge has become a death trap.
