Eye on polls, Congress shifts focus to illegal colonies
New Delhi: Gearing up for the three-way civic poll battle, the Delhi Congress unit has announced that it will dish out a separate detailed manifesto for the people living in unauthorised colonies. The party, which lost its ground in both the Lok Sabha and Delhi Assembly polls, is eyeing the civic polls with “development” as their main agenda. The unauthorised colonies, which form a huge chunk in the voter percentage, have in the past loyally voted for the Congress. However, it will be a mammoth of a task for the party to sway these voters back who had moved to the AAP in 2015.
Making huge promises to garner popularity amidst the slumdwellers, the party announced that it will earmark separate funds for unauthorised colonies if voted into power. The slew of announcements pertaining to slums in Delhi were made for the benefit of 40 lakh people who reside in these colonies.
Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said that the party, if voted to power in the MCD polls, would sanction the layout plans for unauthorised colonies and would send it to the Delhi government within two months.
He also added that after coming to power, the financial position of the MCDs would be strengthened so that the corporations would not have to look elsewhere for giving the salaries of the employees. He said special recruitment of sanitation workers would be made for unauthorised colonies.
He said the Congress would also create special funds for the development of unauthorised colonies, so as to ensure that development works in these colonies do not suffer due to shortage of funds.
The party had worked for the development of the jj clusters during the 15 year tenure of Shiela Dikshit, highlighting its previous works Mr Maken said Congress was the only party which initiated projects to provide flats/plots to those living in JJ Clusters so that they could live in dignity, with proper amenities. The MCD polls are extremely crucial for the morale and over all existence of Congress in the capital.
The DPCC chief is seemingly confident of a good performance in the polls, Mr Maken said there is hardly any work done in Delhi on developmental front. “AAP government has miserably failed in Delhi. Their intention in Delhi was not to govern. Their intention was to capitalise Delhi’s victory and spread their political wings across the country. As a result Arvind Kejriwal’s heart and mind are not in Delhi. Delhi has an absentee chief minister and it is a matter of shame,”
