New Delhi: It has been 30 days since the residents of Trilokpuri Block 2 are getting water mixed with “sewage water” in their taps. The residents have made several complaints about the “turbid and blackish water” to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and concerned agencies, but to no avail.

The people living in Trilokpuri Block 2 have been either buying mineral water cans or using RO water for non-drinking purposes. The residents said the water is “extremely smelly” and filled with dirt and other particles.

“This has become a major health hazard for us. I have been complaining by telephone and sending emails to DJB and Jal Board Sewage department, local MLA and public grievance monitoring system of Delhi government, but to no avail. They are engaged in passing the buck from one department to the other, but nothing is happening on the ground,” said Om Prakesh Dhawan, a resident of Trilokpuri Block 2.

The pipelines in the colony are years old, even the DJB admits this, and due to wear and tear and low pressure, water pipelines and sewage pipelines, which are next to each other, get mixed in case of a leakage, thus giving way to contamination.

When the Asian Age scribe visited the spot on Monday and enquired about the delay in solving the issue, the DJB and  sewage department officials blamed the locals for the water crises. “Due to encroachment on the street, we face difficulty in tracing the source of trouble. We don't have enough manpower to sort out this issue; it will take time to solve this problem,” said the sewage department official, DJB.

A DJB official, who visited the site on Monday, said that he inspected the  area, but could not find the source of contamination.

Meanwhile, Mr Dhawan said that according to DJB website, complaints lodged through any means of the ones they have listed out will be resolved in 24 hours. A DJB spokesperon said the matter will be investigated. Efforts will taken to normalise water supply.
