ASI shot at by robbers in East Delhi encounter

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Delhi police posted at Preet Vihar police station suffered a bullet injury in a shootout on Friday between a group of five criminals and the police, the police said.

According to the police, on receiving secret information that five criminals had planned to commit robbery at a house in G-block of Preet Vihar, a police team, led by ASI Lokesh Sharma, reached the spot at around 2 am.

During the encounter that took place between the police and criminals, one of them snatched Mr Sharma’s service revolver and pulled the trigger, injuring the ASI on his left shoulder.

Mr Sharma was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is undergoing treatment. During the melee, the robbers managed to escape.Efforts are on to nab the accused, according to the police.

According to the police, three or four such gangs, which are very active in the area, reportedly come by train late in the night, commit crimes such as snatching and robbery in a posh area near railway track and escape.

The miscreants had come to Preet Vihar with the intention of looting a home. The police were soon informed of this situation and are currently on a lookout for the accused, said an officer.

Meanwhile, an investigation has been initiated to arrest the accused, the police said, adding that the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the area were being scanned in a bid to identify the robbers.
