Delhi: Rs 18 lakh in fake notes seized, 3 held
New Delhi: In one of the biggest seizures of fake currency post demonetisation, the Special Cell of Delhi Police busted a racket and seized Rs 18 lakh in fake currency in new notes.
The police has arrested three persons who allegedly supplied fake currency to bookies.
Police said that the racket comprised criminals from Sonepat, Haryana and Narela in Delhi.
The police has also recovered a Scorpio car and a Motorcycle, along with three mobile phones.
The accused has been identified as Azad Singh (36), Manoj (37) and Sunil (27).
According to the police, legal tender of old currency notes of higher value had expired on the December 30 last year and the new currency came into the banking system on Novermber 8, 2016.
According to the police, the modus operandi adopted by the accused was based on working in divisions.
While Mr Singh, the mastermind behind the racket, used to get the currency notes scanned and printed, Manoj alias Sonu and Sunil circulated the counterfeit notes to the customers.
The gang members were known to hawala traders and bookies and were involved in in huge cash transactions.
They would charge Rs 40,000 in genuine currency for Rs 1,00,000 for fake currency.
On January 27, the accused were arrested on a tip-off. They were coming near traffic signal light of Village Singhola, Narela at NH-1 at around 11:00 pm in a Scorpio car to exchange counterfeit currency with their associates.
“At about 11:25 pm, the scorpio car was spotted by the team parked near the traffic light signal. Mr Singh was seen occupying the scorpio car alone. After a short while, Manoj and Sunil reached there on a motor cycle. Mr Singh stepped out from the car and delivered two packets, one each to Manoj and Sunil.
