New Delhi: A 19-year-old student of Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT-Delhi), who was in depression as he didn't want to study engineering, allegedly attempted suicide this morning by jumping off the terrace of a hostel building.

Nitish Kumar Purthi, a first year student of Engineering-Physics, is admitted at AIIMS trauma centre and his condition is stated to be critical, said a senior police officer.

He jumped from the fourth floor of Vindyachal hostel and has suffered fracture in his legs, the officer said.

"He was in depression as he didn't want to study engineering. His roommate was taking him downstairs.

"When his roommate went to call a security guard for assistance, the student climbed the terrace on the fourth floor and jumped off the building," said the officer.
