Rare pelvic surgery performed on 60-year-old
New Delhi: A rare surgery was performed on Wednesday on a patient named Jagdish, a 60-year-old man who allegedly fell off a balcony, which was approximately 20 feet from the ground.
Head of Orthopedics department at Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Dr. Navneet Goyal performed the surgery on the fifth day after the patient arrived after helping him stabilize from the trauma.
The patient had damaged his pelvic area, which had sustained a major acetabular fracture. Fractures of the pelvis are uncommon and hence their surgeries are also rare. Because the pelvis is in proximity to major blood vessels and organs, pelvic fractures may cause extensive bleeding which is usually 2-3 litres out of 7 litres of blood that a human body contains. Such injuries require urgent treatment otherwise a patient can die within a day.
It took Dr. Goyal about 3 hours to complete the surgery. “This sort of fracture is not a common one and only 5-6 specialised doctors in Delhi can perform this surgery”, said Dr. Goyal.
