New Delhi: Commuters had to face tough time due to traffic jams on city roads as the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress stepped up their ante against the Centre’s demonetisation move on Monday. While the ruling AAP organised a “jan sabha” to slam Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that the PM is shifting the debate from black economy to cashless economy, the Delhi Congress organised a “Jan Akrosh Diwas” march from Mandi House to Parliament to mark their protest against the move. The traffic movement was affected in Central Delhi and huge traffic snarls were witnessed in the city due to the protests and procession. The Delhi traffic police said that due to protest by Opposition parties, traffic was heavy at inner circle of Connaught Place

“Traffic was heavy at Mandi House, Barakhamba Road and at Tolstoy Marg due to procession. Sansad Marg was closed due to demonstration. Traffic was reportedly heavy at Inner circle of Connaught Place due to demonstration at Rajiv Chowk Metro station gate number 1. Situation remained same in the carriageway from Mandi House towards Jantar Mantar due to procession,” said a senior traffic police official

“Due to the procession, many roads were closed. This might have led to traffic chaos,” said the official.

During the peak hours, especially the evening, traffic movement was affected the most at ITO and other stretches like Mathura Road, India Gate.

Earlier on Monday morning, motorists had a harrowing time as roads of several parts of city witnessed huge traffic jams due to protests and processions. Among the roads which were affected were Vikas Marg, ITO, Mandi House, Barakhamba, Rajeev Chowk Sansad Marg and Jantar Mantar were clogged with vehicular traffic.

ITO was jam-packed with vehicles from Laxmi Nagar to ITO. Commuters heading for work Monday morning were stuck in heavy traffic jams on the first working day of the week. Those rushing to catch early morning trains and flights also got delayed due to snail-paced traffic on affected roads. Traffic movement was also affected from ITO towards India Gate, said a traffic official.

“I was going to AIIMS from Laxmi Nagar. I reached at ITO around at 5.15 pm and had to wait for around an hour to cover it. I was stuck for around 35 minutes at ITO crossing along” said Praveen Kumar, a biker.
